On June 22, Puccini’s opera “Madama Butterfly” will be performed on the deck of the Italian Navy aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, which will be decommissioned in October. The event commemorates the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death and the 120th anniversary of the work’s premiere.
Baritone Roberto Servile will direct the production himself, and young singers participating in the master classes he presides over will perform. Stefano Giaroli will conduct the Terre Verdiane Symphony Orchestra and the chorus of the Teatro Regio di Parma.
The performance will take place at the naval base in La Spezia, facing the Ligurian Sea. The first aircraft carrier in the history of the Italian Navy, the Giuseppe Garibaldi, named after the 19th century military leader who contributed to the unification of the Kingdom of Italy, was commissioned in 1985. After its successor, Cavour, was commissioned in 2009, it operated as a helicopter landing ship.
