MALMÖ 〓 Malmö Symphony Orchestra has appointed Martyn Brabbins as Chief Conductor

2024/06/14

Sweden’s Malmö Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of British conductor Martyn Brabbins as Chief Conductor. His tenure will begin in the 2025/2026 season. The position had been vacant since the retirement of Robert Trevino (2019-2021).

Brabbins, 64, previously served as music director of the Cheltenham Festival in England (2005-2007) and as permanent conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra (2013-2016); he was appointed music director of the English National Opera in 2016 and resigned in 2023 in protest against proposed music staff cutbacks.

Based in the southern Swedish city of Malmö, the orchestra was founded in 1925 and was also in the orchestra pit of the Malmö Opera until 1991, but now operates independently.
