LONDON 〓 Seattle Symphony was named Gramophone’s “Orchestra of the Year”

The award ceremony of “Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2018” by UK classical music magazine “Gramophone” was held in London on 13th. The award was founded in 1977, subject to recording for the year of the previous year. There are 10 divisions, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music world. It is elected by various members of the broadcasting station and the music industry, mainly by critics of “Gramophone” magazine. In the awards ceremony, the award “Orchestra of the Year” newly established this year was announced, the US Seattle Symphony Orchestra was awarded.

“Orchestra of the Year” is recorded between June 2017 and May 2018, for orchestras who sent outstanding albums. This award is characterized by being chosen by voting from the public. Nominations were eight organizations including Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, all but the Seattle Symphony Orchestra was a European orchestra. The Seattle Symphony Orchestra has won 41.8% of the total number of votes (24, 151), awarded separating others.

The Seattle Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1903. Besides concerts, they also perform at the local opera house and perform opera. From 1985 to 2011 Gerard Schwarz served as a music director for a long time and focused on discovering works of 20th century American composers. Current music director is Ludovic Morlot. He was born in Lyon, France in 1973. The Seattle Symphony Orchestra has its own label “Seattle Symphony Media”, and this time Ives and Messiaen’s albums are highly valued.
