This year’s “Bach Medal” was awarded to the American pianist Robert Levin (70). “Bach Medal” has been awarded by Leipzig City to musicians who have contributed to the research and performance of composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) as part of the “Leipzig Bach Music Festival”. This year’s music festival began on the 8th and the awards ceremony took place on the 14th. Past recipients include Gustav Leonhardt, Helmuth Rilling, Philippe Herreweghe, Reinhard Goebel, John Eliot Gardiner, Herbert Blomstedt, Masaaki Suzuki and others.

Levin was born in New York in 1947. He graduated from Harvard University. After teaching at the Curtis music school and Freiburg music university, he has served as a professor of the alma mater from 1993 to 2013. Besides the performance activities, he has been correcting and repairing incomplete works by composers of the 18th century, and with regard to Bach, it is a cantata “Ach! Ich sehe , itzt, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe” BWV 162 orchestra notation revised.
