German tenor singer Peter Seiffert passed away on the 14th. He was 71 years old. He was one of the leading heroic tenors of the modern era and had a long career at the Bayreuth Festival. He was awarded the title of “Court Singer” by the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
He was born in Düsseldorf, studied at the local music academy, and made his debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He became a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he gained international recognition for his role as Lohengrin.
With his singing and acting, he has performed at renowned opera houses around the world, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
He specialized in Wagner, performing roles such as Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Tristan, and Siegmund, and made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1996 as Stolzling. He subsequently appeared at the festival in the role of Lohengrin.
In 2024, he will become an honorary member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has made numerous recordings and won the Echo Classic Award for Singer of the Year in 1999. In 2003, his performance in Daniel Barenboim’s production of Tannhäuser won a Grammy Award in the United States.
