2025/05/08

François-Xavier Roth, the conductor who had been suspended for sexual harassment, canceled his appearance at the Baden-Baden Whitsun Festival. He reportedly fractured his shoulder. He was scheduled to lead the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he serves as chief conductor, in the festival’s opening performance and resume his conducting activities.

Roth canceled the opening concert on May 31. He was scheduled to conduct Boulez’s Notation I-IV and VII, Ravel’s Piano Concerto with Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist, and Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2. No replacement has been announced yet.

This year’s Whitsun Music Festival is dedicated to composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Boulez passed away in 2016 in Baden-Baden, where he had lived for over 60 years. The festival will run until June 9, featuring a program of works by the composer and pieces that inspired him.
