The Houston Grand Opera in the United States has announced that American conductor James Gaffigan will be its next music director.
He will take over from Patrick Summers, who has held the position since 1998, starting from the 2027/2028 season. Gaffigan has served as general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin since 2023, and his term expires in the summer of 2027.
Gaffigan, 46, was born in New York. He studied at the New England Conservatory and the Shepherd School of Music in Houston before making his conducting debut.
He previously served as principal conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland (2011-2021). Since 2021, he has also served as music director of the Reina Sofía Palace of the Arts in Valencia, Spain, a position he plans to retire from at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
