Around the Music Festival

The Salzburger Festspiele in Austria has announced its lineup for the summer of 2026. The festival will open on July 17 and run until August 30.

The program will feature nine operas, including new productions, revivals, and concert performances. The three new productions are: Bizet’s《Carmen》, conducted by Teodor Currentzis; Richard Strauss’s《Ariadne auf Naxos》, conducted by Manfred Honeck; and Messiaen’s《Saint Francois d’Assise》, conducted by Maxime Pascal.

In addition to Christof Loy’s revival of Mozart’s《Così fan tutte》, the summer festival will also feature Rossini’s《Il Viaggio a Reims》, starring Cecilia Bartoli, artistic director of the Salzburg Pentecostal Festival.

At the same time, four works will be performed in concert form: Pascal Dusapin’s《Passion》 will be conducted by Franck Ollu, Massenet’s《Werther》 will be conducted by Alain Altinoglu, Mozart’s《Lucio Silla》 will be conducted by Ádám Fischer, and Henze’s《Der Prinz von Homburg》 will be conducted by Ingo Metzmacher.

The five conductors who will lead the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (the festival’s resident orchestra) in concerts are: Gustavo Dudamel, Tugan Sokhiev, Riccardo Muti, Christian Thielemann, and Andris Nelsons.

The lineup of artists participating in the solo recitals and other events is as impressive as ever, including Martha Argerich, Yuja Wang, Renaud Capuçon, Alexander Malofeev, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Kirill Gerstein, and others.

Guest orchestras include: the Astrid Concerto (conductor: Emmanuelle Haim), the Budapest Festival Orchestra (conductor: Iván Fischer), the Utopia Orchestra (conductor: Teodor Currentzis), the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (conductor: Philippe Jordan), the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor: Kirill Petrenko), and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (conductor: Manfred Honeck).
