The Halle Orchestra (The Hallé), based in Manchester, England, has teamed up with the German company Siemens AG to launch a new conductor competition. Named “The Siemens Halle International Conductor Competition”, the first held in 2020. It will start on February 20th and will be announced on 22nd.
The winning prize is £ 15,000. In addition to the prize money, the winner will have the opportunity to study for two years under the Principal conductor Mark Elder. He will also be responsible for directing the youth orchestra.
The Halle Orchestra was founded in 1857 by the German pianist, conductor Karl Halle. One of the oldest orchestras in the UK. Conductor John Barbirolli became a permanent conductor in 1943 and rapidly increased his reputation, and was known for establishing a period as a world-class combination until he died in 1970.
