The Dallas Symphony Orchestra announced that it will welcome Gemma New as Principal guest conductor from the 2019/2020 season. New is 32 years old, born in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, in 1986. After graduating from Canterbury College in Christchurch, she studied Conducting at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, USA. After that she was an assistant to Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen in the Los Angeles Philharmonic and was involved in programs for youth, school, community, etc. Currently working mainly in North America, she is a music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra of Canada and a permanent conductor of the St.Louis Symphony Orchestra. In the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Jaap van Zweden, who has served as music director since 2008, has retired as long as this season and has decided to invite Fabio Luigi to replace him in 2020.
