LUCERNE 〓 Orchestra returning from Italy drop off from opera, spread of new coronavirus infection

The performance of the opera Salome at the Luzerner Theater on February 29 was switched from orchestral to piano accompaniment.

Based on local reports, the decision was made by the Canton of Lucerne, concerned that the orchestra members had been infected.

The orchestra dropped out is Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, the resident orchestra of the Lucerne Theater.

The orchestra was led by Principal Conductor James Gaffigan and performed in Udine on February 15 and Lugano on February 16.

The orchestra was replaced by Valeria Polunina, an accompaniment pianist.
