The next Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been named Edward Gardner. He replaced Vladimir Jurowsky, who has been the principal conductor since the 2007/2008 season. The term is five years from the 2021/2022 season. Gardner has been the principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway from 2015, and his term will expire in the 2021/2222 season.
Gardner was born in 1974 in Gloucester, England. After studying at the Royal College of Music, he served as a deputy conductor of the Halle Orchestra under Mark Elder and a music director for a tour performance at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. In 2006 he became music director of the English National Opera. Before retiring in 2015, he served as the Principal Guest Conductor (2011-2016) of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
In the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the foreign conductor has been the principal conductor ever since he welcomed Bernard Haitink in 1967, and it has been around half a century for a British conductor to meet.
