VIENNA 〓 Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the program for the 2023 New Year’s Concert

2022/11/16

The program for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concert on New Year’s Day 2023 has been announced. The conductor for 2023 will be Franz Welser-Möst, who will make his third appearance with the orchestra, following appearances in 2010 and 2013.

The “New Year’s Concert” is an annual event held on New Year’s Day at their home base, the Great Hall of the Musikverein. It is also a “New Year’s greeting card of music from the capital of music,” with performances of waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family.

However, in 2021, when Riccardo Muti conducted the concert, it was held without an audience for the first time since its establishment in 1939 due to the worldwide outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The program is as follows: The only piece that has been performed previously is Josef Strauss’ Waltz “Aquarellen,” which closes the program, and 14 of the 15 pieces are being performed for the first time.

In addition, while there are only two works each by Johann II and Eduard, there are eight by Josef, giving Welser-Möst his own unique color.

Meanwhile, in addition to the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Vienna Girls’ Choir will participate for the first time, which is also a major topic of discussion.

They will perform in Josef Strauss’ Polka Française “Heiterer Muth”. The Girls’ Choir was founded in 2004 and has 25 members ranging in age from 9 to 15.
