The BBC Proms, London’s summer music festival, has announced its performance lineup for 2022, which will run from July 15 to September 10 at its home venue, the Royal Albert Hall. The “Opening Night” on July 15 will feature Verdi’s “Requiem” performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Sakari Oramo, and the chorus.
The “Last Night” will be conducted by Dalia Stasevska. She will be joined by soprano Lise Davidsen and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. The composer in the spotlight is the English Ethel Smith (1858-1944), whose opera “The Wreckers” will be performed on July 24, the violin concerto on July 25, the Mass in D major on August 20, and the piano trio on September 5.
The guest orchestras are as diverse as always. Klaus Mäkelä & Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Marin Alsop & Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kirill Petrenko & Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, John Eliot Gardiner & Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin & the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Zubin Mehta will also lead the Australian World Orchestra. The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, led by Canadian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson and featuring Ukrainian musicians, will also make a guest appearance. Of course, the London Symphony Orchestra led by Simon Rattle will also make a guest appearance, performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 on August 24.
