The Metropolitan Opera in New York has announced that bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green will take on the role of Wotan in the new four-part production of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” which will begin in the 2027/2028 season. The announcement was made by Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, to the Associated Press.
The new production of “Der Ring des Nibelungen” will be directed by Yuval Sharon, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and feature Lisette Davidsson as Brünnhilde. The production will be staged one opera per year starting in 2027, with a complete performance of all four operas scheduled for 2030.
Green is a 39-year-old native of Suffolk, Virginia. At the age of 12, he was sent to a juvenile detention center for assaulting his mother and brother, but after meeting a vocal teacher who believed in his talent, he entered the world of opera and has since expanded his career with his imposing 193 cm stature and deep voice.
He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012 as the Mandarin in Puccini’s Turandot. Since then, he has appeared in over 150 performances, playing a variety of roles. This summer, he is appearing as Wotan in the Santa Fe Opera’s new production of “Die Walküre”, commenting on the good news, “I never imagined that my career would take off like this.”
