Canadian Timothy Chooi won the 10th International Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition which was held in Hanover. In addition to the prize money of 50 thousand euros, Chooi will be given the opportunity to lend Guardagnini made in 1765 and to appear in 12 concerts for international debut.

Chooi is 24 years old born in Victoria and is studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School of Music.

The second prize is Dmytro Udovychenko of Ukraine, the third prize is Cosima Soulez Larivière of France. In addition, the fourth prize was Rennosuke Fukuda of Japan, the fifth prize was Leonard Fu of Germany, and the sixth prize was Youjin Lee of Korea.

Competition was created by Foundation of Lower Saxony(Stiftung Niedersachsen) in commemoration of Joseph Joachim(1831-1907). He is a legendary violin legend who was also active as a conductor and composer, premiered Brahms’ violin concertos. The first competition was held in 1991 and held once every three years.

2018 opens on October 9th. 32 people participated in the primary preliminary contest.

Ultimately six finalists advanced to the final round, and on 22nd and 23rd they will serve as the first violin of the string quartet. On the 25th and 26th they played concertos with NDR Radiophilharmonie conducted by Andrew Manze.

The judges were 12 members including Salvatore Akkado, Andrej Bielow, Masafumi Hori, Kyung Sun Lee, Pavel Vernikov.
