Conductor Daniel Barenboim returned to the podium on August 9 for the first time in several months. He conducted the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which he helped found and nurture, in Bremen. He had been canceling performances since announcing in February that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The concert marks the first day of the orchestra’s summer tour. The tour is scheduled for two weeks with six performances, including a guest appearance at the Waldbühne in Berlin on the 10th, a concert in Lübeck at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival on the 12th, followed by guest appearances at the Rheingau Festival (13th), the Salzburg Festival (15th), and the Lucerne Festival (17th).
Baremboim is currently 82 years old. The program he will conduct on tour includes Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Lang Lang as soloist, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.”
