Antonio Meneses, an internationally acclaimed Brazilian cellist, released a statement via social media, revealing that he was diagnosed with a progressive brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme in June. He has now cancelled all concert schedules and is receiving palliative care at his home in Switzerland, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born in Recife, a port city in northeastern Brazil, and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. 66 years old, he began playing the cello at the age of 10, met Italian cellist Antonio Janigro at 16, became a student of Janigro’s and went to Europe to study with him in Dusseldorf and later in Stuttgart.

He won the first prize at the “Munich International Music Competition” in 1977 and the “International Tchaikovsky Competition” in 1982. Since then, he has been active internationally, performing with prominent orchestras and conductors.

He is also active in chamber music, and is known as the last member of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio with pianist Menahem Pressler and violinist Daniel Hope.

He is also enthusiastic about mentoring the next generation, and has taught at the Reina Sofia Conservatory in Spain and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and since 2008 at the Bern Conservatory, but according to the statement, he has quit all of these to focus on his treatment.
