The NHK Symphony Orchestra of Japan announced that it will tour Taiwan in late August. This will be the first overseas tour in four years and the first with principal conductor Fabio Luisi. The tour will visit Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.
The first time the NHK Symphony Orchestra toured Taiwan was in 1971, when Japan still had diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (=Taiwan), and this tour will follow in 2016. The performances will be held at the National Grand Theatre in Taichung on the 23rd, the National Arts Center in Kaohsiung on the 24th, and the National Music Office in Taipei on the 25th.
The program is the same for all three cities and includes Weber’s Overture to “Der Freischütz”, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The soloist is Paul Huang, a Taiwan native who studied at the Juilliard School and is currently based in New York.
