Mozart Week, held annually at the end of January in Mozart’s native Salzburg, Austria, has announced its performance lineup for 2025. The event will be held from January 23 to February 2, with 51 events scheduled. The theme is “Destination Mozart. It will focus on his predecessor composers who inspired him, including Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Haydn, Schütz, Buxtehude, and Gluck.
According to the announcement, the centerpiece of 2025 will be a production of Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” in which Roland Villazón, artistic director of the festival, will himself play the lead role. The production will be directed by Nikolaus Habjan, and Christina Pluhar will conduct the Ensemble L’Arpeggiata.
The guest performing groups are as spectacular as usual. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will give three concerts, conducted by Adam Fischer, Thomas Guggeis, and Oksana Lyniv. In addition, Le Concert des Nations led by Jordi Savall, the Ghent Collegium Vocale conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mitsuko Uchida, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Robin Ticciati, and the Andrea Barca Capella conducted by András Schiff.
