The Cincinnati May Festival in the United States has announced that American conductor Marin Alsop will serve as its artistic director for 2027. Soprano Renée Fleming served as artistic director in 2025, and soprano Julia Bullock will serve in 2026.
The Cincinnati May Festival, founded in 1873, is considered the longest-running choral festival in the Western Hemisphere. The local Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the “Cincinnati May Festival Choir,” formed specifically for the festival, play leading roles.
Alsop is 69 years old and was born in Manhattan, New York. She currently serves as principal conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, and as principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra in the UK.
At the 2027 Vocal Festival, she will conduct the US premiere of a new work by Anna Clyne, as well as works by Julia Wolfe and Roxanna Panufnik, and Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” with lyrics translated by Tracy K. Smith.
