Vienna will have a new open-air opera festival in the summer of 2024. The festival, called “Wiener Opernsommer Belvedere,” will take place in the park of the Belvedere Palace, and conductor Joji Hattori will serve as artistic director and conductor.
According to the announcement, the festival will run from July 1 to 20, with 10 performances of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni. The director and casting director is Dominik Am Zenhoff-Söns, and Thomas Tatzl will play the role of Don Giovanni.
The palace was built by Prinz Eugen in the service of the Habsburgs, who commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, one of the leading architects of the time, to build a summer residence: the Lower Palace from 1714 to 1716 and the Upper Palace, a guest house, from 1720 to 1723.
After the death of Prinz Eugen, it was sold to Maria Theresa of the Habsburgs in 1752, and was the site of not only the Congress of Vienna but also the signing of the Austrian State Treaty between Austria and the Allies in 1955 after World War II. Today, it is the second largest museum in Austria.
