MILAN 〓 Fortunato Ortumbina, President of Teatro La Fenice, to be the next President of La Scala

2024/03/12

The board of directors of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, chaired by the mayor, has announced that the next president will be Fortunato Ortombina, who is also president of Teatro La Fenice in Venice. La Scala will have its first Italian president in 20 years.

He succeeds Dominique Meyer, who has been in the position since 2020 and whose term will expire at the end of February next year. Meyer, who has served as president of the Vienna State Opera, is now 68 years old and had difficulty extending his contract after the Meloni administration enacted a new law setting the age limit for the head of the Opera Foundation at 70.

Ortombina was born in Mantova in 1960 and is 63 years old. He studied music and humanities at the Aligho Boito Conservatory in Parma and at the University of Parma, and has served on the staffs of the Royal Theatre of Parma, the Royal Theatre of Turin, and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, etc.

From 2001 to 2003, he was artistic director at the Teatro La Fenice. He was then Artistic Director Coordinator at Teatro alla Scala from 2003 to 2007, returning to Teatro La Fenice in 2007 to serve as President.
