WARSAW 〓 Climate Activists Interrupt Antoni Wit’s 80th Birthday Concert

Two female climate activists took the stage at Warsaw’s Philharmonic Hall on March 4 while the National Philharmonic Orchestra was playing, held up a banner and shouted slogans, and were removed by an attendant.

The evening was a concert celebrating the 80th birthday of Antoni Wit, the legendary Polish conductor, and Wit himself snatched the banner from the women who interrupted the performance.

Wit was born in Krakow on February 9, 1944. After graduating from the Krakow Conservatory, he went to Paris to study, won a prize at the 1971 Karajan International Conducting Competition, and was trained as Herbert von Karajan’s assistant at the Salzburg Festival. He then moved to the United States in 1973 to participate in the Tanglewood Music Festival.

He served as Music Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 2000 and as General and Artistic Director of the Warsaw State Philharmonic Orchestra from 2001 to 2013.

In addition, he has made numerous guest appearances with orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and has taught younger students at the Chopin Academy of Music.
