Japan’s top orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, has announced its subscription concert lineup for the 2024/2025 season. The new season will open with Fabio Luisi, Chief Conductor since the 2022/2023 season, conducting the Bruckner Symphony No. 8, which marks the 200th anniversary of his birth.

According to the announcement, Luisi will appear in the opening concert in September, followed by the December subscription and the May 2025 subscription. The NHK Symphony Orchestra will be a guest at the “Mahler Festival” in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in the Netherlands in May. Luisi’ concert in May will feature Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4, which will be performed there.

The splendid lineup of guest conductors is also a topic of discussion. In addition to Herbert Blomstedt and Vladimir Fedoseyev, who were unable to visit Japan the previous season, the orchestra will be joined by conductors at the forefront of the world orchestra circuit, including former principal conductor and conductor emeritus, Paavo Järvi.

Among them are Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Petr Popelka, Giedrė Šlekytė , and Tarmo Peltokoski, all of whom will be making their orchestral debuts, and all of whom are making remarkable strides.

In addition, Juanjo Mena and Dima Slobodeniouk will return to the podium. The Japanese conductor will be joined by Kazuki Yamada, who will serve as the principal conductor and artistic advisor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the U.K. from April 2023.

Invited soloists also include Hélène Grimaud, Nelson Goerner, Francesco Piemontesi, and Mao Fujita on piano. The lineup also includes Akiko Suwanai and Fumiaki Miura on violin, Karl-Heinz Schütz on flute, Radek Baborak on horn, and Christiane Karg on soprano.
