The Leipzig Opera has announced that it will hold a festival from June to July 2022 with intensive performances of Wagner’s 13 operas. A major event that concludes the final season for Ulf Schirmer, who has been artistic and music director since 2009.

The festival, named “Wagner 22”, is an ambitious performance to take all Wagner’s works, except for “Der Ring des Nibelungen”. It also honors Gustav Brecher, a pre-war conductor who was chased by the Nazis from the Leipzig Opera and finally died himself.

There are a variety of artists to perform, including Evelyn Herlitzius, Klaus Florian Vogt, Lise Lindstrom, Stefan Vinke, and Michael Volle. Entering the pit is the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.

The Leipzig Opera was founded in 1693 and is the third civic music theater in Europe after Venice and Hamburg. It was prosperous by the composer Telemann. The original building was destroyed by an air raid in 1943 during World War II, but it was rebuilt in 1960 as the first theater architecture in East Germany.
