AMSTERDAM 〓 Iván Fischer, New Honorary Director Of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will welcome Iván Fischer as honorary conductor. The term of office is from the 2021/2022 season.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra currently has two honorary conductors, Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Chailly. Since making his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1987, Fisher has been a guest performer with them almost every year. He has released a Beethoven’s Complete Symphonies that recorded the concerts from 2013 to 2014.

He was born in Budapest, Hungary and is 69 years old. A Jewish Hungarian, his father, Shandor, and his brother, Adam, are also famous conductors.

He founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 1983 and is still a music director and one of Hungary’s leading conductors. From 2012 to 2018, he was also chief conductor of the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra.

In August 2018, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra dismissed Daniele Gatti, the chief conductor, who was suspected of sexual harassment. Since then, the post has been vacant.
