SYDNEY 〓 Simone Young appointed as the next principal conductor of the Sydney Symphony

Simone Young will be appointed as the next chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The term of office is three years from the 2022/2023 season. Successor to David Robertson, who has been the principal conductor since 2014.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra began in 1932 when the Australian Broadcasting Corporation gathered 24 musicians. After World War II, the orchestra officially named the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The golden age came after 1971 when Willem van Otterloo became chief conductor. Based in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, completed in 1973.

Young was born in Sydney in 1961 and was 58 years old. Studied composition, conduct and piano at the New South Wales Conservatory (currently the Sydney Conservatory of the University of Sydney). Conductor debuted in 1985, set in the Sydney Opera House.

She then served as the principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (1998-2002), the Australian Opera (2001-2003), and the Hamburg State Opera (2005-2015). She is also known for conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time as a female conductor.
