The Philadelphia Orchestra of the United States will serve as the resident orchestra for the China International Music Competition. The competition was established in 2019, led by the Chinese Academy of Music in Beijing. Held annually in May, the participants have an irregular style with only invitees. Piano section and violin section are performed alternately. The first was the piano section, where Tony Yun from Canada took first Prize.
The contract between the Philadelphia Orchestra and the contest is five years from 2020. Already at this year’s competition, the orchestra was accompanied with music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in final. In addition to the competition, it will also cooperate with master classes. The relationship between the Philadelphia Orchestra and China is long. They made their first China tour as an American orchestra in 1973, before normalizing diplomatic relations. In May of this year, a Chinese tour was also held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations.
