Italian Baritone singer Rolando Panerai died on October 23 at the age of 95. One of the singers active in the golden age of post-war opera, he attracted music lovers with a soft and warm voice. He has performed with many legendary singers such as Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano, and has participated in numerous recordings. He was good at roles such as Ford, Rigoletto, Figaro, Germont, Amonazuro, and sings over 150 roles.
He was born in Campi Bisenzio, close to Florence. He studied vocal music in Florence and Milan and took the first stage in 1947 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1951, he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in the role of Sharpless of “Madama Butterfly”. He participated in the world premiere of Menotti’s opera “Amelia al Ballo” in 1954 and debuted in 1957 at the Salzburg Festival.
Since then, he had been active in opera theaters around the world. After retirement, if there was a chance, he stood on the stage, and in 2011 he appeared in the “Gianni Schicchi” of Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice. For his achievements so far, he received the “Maria Callas award” in 2015 and the “Tulio Seraphin award” in November last year.
