The Zurich Opera House has announced that Lorenzo Viotti will become its next Music Director. His term will run for two years starting with the 2028/2029 season. He succeeds Gianandrea Noseda, who has held the position since 2021 and will step down after the 2027/2028 season.
Viotti, 35, was born in Lausanne, Switzerland. His father was the conductor Marcello Viotti, who served as Music Director of La Fenice Theatre in Venice, Italy, and died suddenly at age 50.
Viotti studied piano, voice, and percussion in Lyon, and conducting in Vienna and Weimar. He has already guest-conducted numerous world-class orchestras and has been entrusted to lead the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on its June 2024 tour through Germany, Switzerland, and Spain.
He has previously served as Principal Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, Portugal (2018–2021) and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, which performs in the pit of the Dutch National Opera (2021–2025). He has been appointed Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, effective 2026.
At the Zurich Opera House, he conducted Massenet’s Werther in 2018, Kálmán’s The Csárdás Queen in 2020, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt and Johann Bogner-Strauß II’s Die Fledermaus in 2025.
