TOKYO 〓 Weigle became the 10th chief conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra

The Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra announced on 9th May that the German conductor Sebastian Weigle will be the 10th permanent conductor (= chief conductor). It was also announced that Sylvain Cambreling, who served as the ninth permanent conductor since 2010, will become the Conductor Laureate after retiring. Weigle ‘s term is three years from April 1, 2019 to the end of March 2022. The Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra says, “We highly appreciate Mr. Weigle ‘s broad repertoire, centered on German music and certain musicality, and we are hoping for further improvement in artistry.”

Weigle was born in 1961 in Berlin, Germany. After learning horn, piano and conducting at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, he served Principal Horn for 15 years at the Berlin State Opera Orchestra of the East German era, then turned to the conductor. He continued active in opera houses around the world, and also guests at the Bayreuth Festival in 2007. After overseen General Director of Music (GMD) of Liceu Theater in Barcelona, ​​Spain, since 2008 he has served as General Director of Music at Opera Frankfurt. For the first time in the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in 2016 and in 2017 with Tokyo Nikikai ‘s performance “Der Rosenkavalier”.
