The Sarasota Symphony Orchestra in the United States has announced the appointment of Giancarlo Guerrero as Music Director. His term of office will begin with the 2025/2026 season. The post of music director had been vacant since the death of Bramwell Tovey during his tenure in 2022.
Guerrero is 55 years old and was born in Managua, Nicaragua. His nationality is Costa Rican, and he studied at Baylor University and Northwestern University before becoming music director of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra in 2001, his first post. He has won six previous U.S. Grammy Awards with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras where he has served as music director.
He was appointed Music Director of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in 2009 and will retire after the 2024/2025 season. While there, he also served as artistic director of the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland from the 2017/2018 to the 2022/2023 seasons.
