The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra has announced the appointment of Matthias Pintscher as its next music director. He will succeed Jaime Martín—who has held the position since 2019—starting in the 2027/2028 season, and will begin his tenure as Music Director Designate in the 2026/2027 season.
Pincher is a 55-year-old composer born in Marl, Germany, and a leading figure among composers of the 1970s generation. He studied at the Detmold University of Music under Giselher Klebe and Manfred Trojahn, and subsequently saw his talent fully blossom following his encounter with Hans Werner Henze.
Influenced by composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Helmut Lachenmann, he maintains an active career as both a composer and conductor; he served as Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain—founded by Pierre Boulez—from 2013 to 2022, and has held the position of Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony since the 2024/2025 season.
