On December 15, San Francisco created the “MTT Way,” named for Michael Tilson Thomas, who served as music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for 25 years from 1995 to 2020.
Named for the block of Grove Street between Franklin Street and Van Ness Avenue in front of the Davis Symphony Hall, which has been the orchestra’s home since 1980.
Thomas will turn 79 on October 21, and after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2021, he continues to conduct while consulting with his health. This past October, he conducted Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony, of which he is the laureate music director.
He attended the unveiling ceremony on October 15, and reportedly excited the audience with his mischievous greeting, “When driving nearby, please make as many left turns as possible to enter or leave the MTT Way.
