COLOGNE 〓 Cristian Macelaru will be the next chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne

WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne (formerly Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra) decided to invite Cristian Macelaru (37), an American conductor from Romania, to the next chief conductor on the 2nd. Succeeding from Jukka-Pekka Saraste who is the principal conductor since 2010. The term of office is from 2019.

Macelaru started as a violinist, acted as the youngest concertmaster of the Miami Symphony Orchestra, and later studied at the University of Miami and Rice, studied at the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival.

After conducting debut, he is leading various orchestras throughout the United States, and since 2014 he is a conductor of Philadelphia Orchestra. WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne is a broadcast orchestra belonging to Western German Broadcasting (WDR) based in Cologne City.
