MUNICH 〓 Bavarian State Opera has announced a performance lineup for the 2020/2021 season

2020/03/16

The Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) in Munich, Germany, has announced a performance lineup for the 2020/2021 season.

There are eight new productions. Includes the world premiere of Luca Francesconi’s “Timon of Athens” and Miroslav Srnka’s “Singularity.”

Francesconi is an Italian composer born in 1956. Srnka is a Czech composer born in 1975. Surnka’s opera “South Pole” was premiered in 2016 at the Bavarian State Opera.

Walter Brauenfels (1882-1954) was a German composer from Frankfurt, and was regarded as one of Germany’s leading opera composers along with Richard Strauss and Franz Schreker in the 1920s.

However, because of his Jewish descent, he was displaced from public office by the Nazi Germany in 1933, and his music was branded “Entartete Musik.”

“The Birds” is one of his masterpieces and the third opera. This work was premiered in Munich under the Baton of Bruno Walter in 1920.

The 2020/2021 season is the last season for the combination of Nikolaus Bachler, who has led the theater since the 2008/2009 season, and Kirill Petrenko, the music director.

From the 2021/2022 season, Serge Dorny will be appointed general director and Vladimir Jurowsky will be appointed general music director.

For German items, Richard Strauss “The knight of the Rose” and Wagner “Tristan and Isolde” will be newly produced. The former is directed by Barrie Kosky and the latter by Krzysztof Warlikowski.
