2025/09/04

The Orchestre de Paris in France has announced that Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will become its next chief conductor. His term will run for five years starting with the 2027/2028 season, following the departure of Klaus Mäkelä at the end of the 2026/2027 season.

Salonen, 65, was born in Helsinki. He studied horn and composition at the Sibelius Academy, where he formed the experimental music ensemble “Toimi” with fellow students Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho.

He began his conducting career in 1983, when he stepped in at short notice to replace Michael Tilson Thomas on the podium of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He subsequently served as Principal Conductor or Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1984-1995), the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1992-2009), and the Philharmonia Orchestra (2008-2021).

He then became the 12th Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony starting with the 2020/2021 season. However, he declined to renew his contract, stating he could not agree with the board’s vision for the future, and stepped down this past June after five years in the role.
