The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra has extended its contract with Music Director Andris Nelsons. Nelsons has held the position since 2018, and this contract renewal extends his tenure for an additional five years, through the end of the 2022/2032 season.
Nelsons, 46, was born in Riga, the capital of Latvia. He transitioned from principal trumpet of the Latvian National Opera Orchestra to conducting, studying under Neeme Järvi, Jorma Panula, and Mariss Jansons.
He subsequently served as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera (2003-2007) and Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (2008-2015). He made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany in 2010.
He was appointed Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2014. While his contract was extended last January, it is a rolling contract with no fixed expiration date.
He also maintains a strong relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, having been entrusted to conduct their 2020 New Year’s Concert and 2024 Summer Night Concert.
