The Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, Germany, has announced its concert lineup for the 2026/2027 season, revealing that it will hold a music festival in May 2027 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death.
The Gewandhaus Orchestra has a deep connection with Beethoven, having premiered works such as Piano Concerto No. 1 and No. 5 “Emperor,” and the Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello. In the 1825/1826 season, they became the first orchestra in the world to successfully perform all of Beethoven’s symphonies, and since 1918 they have performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the end of each year.
The music festival will be held from May 9th to 23rd. In addition to a complete performance of the symphonies conducted by principal conductor Andris Nelsons, soloists such as pianists Lang Lang and Igor Levit, violinist Leonidas Kavakos, and cellist Pablo Ferrandes will join the performance.
