The Salzburg Easter festival postponed the world premiere of the new work of Sofia Gubaidulina. The new work is what the music festival commissioned her to compose. Because of the late completion of the work, Christian Thielemann, music director at the festival, and his orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, said they can not have enough time to rehearse before the opening.
This year’s festival opens on April 13rd and ends on 22nd. The festival decides to premiere a new work naming “The Wrath of God” at the next year’s festival and instead plays “Jubel Overture” of Weber’s composition.
Gubaidulina was born in 1931, Chetpol, the former Soviet Tatar Autonomous Republic (present Russian Federation Tatarstan Republic). She studied composition and piano at Kazan Conservatory, Moscow Conservatory, and after graduation he was engaged in film music work. In 1974 she won the prize at the Roman International Composer Competition and received attention. At that time, she formed an improvisation group using ethnic musical instruments with composer fellows.
In the 1980’s, her violin concerto “Offercoretum” was played by prominent violinists including Gidon Kremel and established an international prestige. However, avoiding conflict with the former Soviet regime, she moved to Hamburg, Germany in 1992 and is developing vigorous composition activities.
