On August 12, the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria, announced the end of its outdoor exhibition featuring golden statues of Mozart. Remarkably, 210 of the 230 statues on display have already been stolen.
The exhibition, titled “Mozart: The Unruly Genius,” was organized to commemorate the 270th anniversary of the composer’s birth. It was scheduled to run from July 15 to August 30, with events centered around Mirabell Gardens.
The miniature statue stands approximately 50 centimeters tall and was created by the German artist Ottmar Hörl. It is made of weather-resistant plastic and features a gold finish.
The foundation has recovered the remaining statues, but it reports that it cannot procure additional replacement Mozart statues because the manufacturer is currently on summer holiday.
