In the performance of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on 18th, an incident occurred where a substitute singer arrived at the venue seven minutes before his turn. What happened was the performance of Wagner “Die Walküre” which was performed in a concert style. Jaap van Zweden, who has been a music director since 2008, is one of farewell performances planned for leaving, and Matthias Goerne was cast as a role of Wotan. However, Goerne lost physical condition and canceled the appearance at noon. Orchestra caught up with a matter of searching for a substitute in 6 hours until the opening.
According to reports in the United States, Orchestra has appeared in Kyle Albertson of Bass Baritone who was in the cover of the “Die Walküre” performance at the San Francisco Opera. Albertson immediately headed to the airport using “Uber” and booked the fastest flight in the car. In the airport, the deputy conductor waited in the car, and in the car to the Meyerson Symphony Center, home of Orchestra, taught Zweden instructions. Albertson said he dashed those instructions while changing into suits.
Eventually, he arrived in the hall 7 minutes before the Second ACT started playing. Albertson came up to the stage from Second ACT and sang Wotan’s famous monologue. Albertson’s “Wotan debut” progressed smoothly, he said he was cheered at the last curtain call.
