Conductor Myung-Whun Chung has extended his contract with the city of Busan in his native South Korea. Since 2023, Chung has served as the artistic director of the Busan Concert Hall (“Classic Busan”) and the Busan Opera House, which is scheduled to open in 2027.
The Busan Opera House, designed by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta, is being built on reclaimed land along the Busan North Port waterfront—an area that was formerly an industrial zone—with major construction work scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Chung is currently 73 years old and is set to assume the role of music director at La Scala in Milan starting in 2027.
