The Russian Ministry of Culture announced on August 16 that Ivan Nikiforchin will be the artistic director of the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The post of artistic director had been vacant since Pavel Kogan retired in April 2022.
Nikiforchin was born in Moscow and is 29 years old. He studied composition and orchestration at the Moscow Conservatory. He has won numerous awards in Russia, including the first “Rachmaninoff International Competition” for pianists, composers, and conductors, and in 2021 he will make his debut at the Bolshoi Theater.
The Moscow State Academy Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1943 as the symphony orchestra of the Moscow Regional Philharmonic Society. Its first chief conductor was Lev Shteinberg, conductor of the Bolshoi Theater and People’s Artist of the Soviet Union.
