VIENNA 〓 Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will be the first female conductor to conduct a subscription concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has announced its performance lineup for the 2024/2025 season. Conductors for the ten annual subscription concerts include Daniele Gatti, Andris Nelsons, Alain Altinoglu, Klaus Mäkelä, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Christian Thielemann, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Franz Welser-Möst will be featured.

According to the orchestra, female conductors have conducted the orchestra in the past, with Simone Young, Emmanuelle Haim, and Joana Mallwitz, but this is the first time in history that a woman has conducted a subscription concert. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will conduct on May 3 and 4, 2025, conducting Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, which will feature Yuja Wang as soloist, and Sibelius’ Lemminkainen Suite.

Grazinite-Tyra is 37 years old and was born in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. She is the first female conductor in history to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, and is a remarkable young talent. She has served as General Music Director of the Salzburg City Theatre (2015-2017) and then as Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (2016-2022).
