The German conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens has been appointed principal conductor and art advisor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. After Michael Francis retired, the principal conductor was absent for three years.
Norrköping is a city in the Middle East of Sweden, and the orchestra was founded in 1912. Herbert Blomstedt, Okko Kamu, Franz Welser-Möst and others have been the principal conductors of the past.
Steffens was born in 1961 in Trier, close to the border with Luxembourg. He started his musical activities as a clarinet player and became a conductor after serving as the Principal player of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. From this season, he has been the music director of the Prague State Opera.
