GOTHENBURG 〓 Santtu-Matias Rouvali will step down as chief conductor of Gothenburg Symphony

Young Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali will step down as chief conductor of Sweden’s Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra at the end of the 2024/2025 season, a position he has held since 2017.

Rouvali succeeds Esa-Pekka Salonen as principal conductor of the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra beginning in the 2021/2022 season, a five-year term. Rouvali was born in Lahti in 1985 and is 38 years old. He is the youngest principal conductor of a major orchestra in London.

Prior to his appointment as principal conductor of the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, he served as artistic director and principal conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in his home country since 2013, retiring at the end of the 2022/2023 season.
