The Staatskapelle Dresden announced on April 21 that it has requested the orchestra’s board of directors and the Saxony government’s Minister of Culture and Tourism to begin negotiations with Daniele Gatti as its next chief conductor.
He will succeed Christian Thielemann, who has served as chief conductor since 2012, beginning with the 2024/2025 season.
Gatti, now 60, was dismissed as principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Netherlands in August 2018 following reports of sexual harassment.
He has since served as music director of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and has been music director of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino since the 2021/2021 season.
According to the announcement, Gatti’s orchestral debut was in February 2000, at the invitation of then chief conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli. He is scheduled to make his next appearance on the podium in Dresden in July 2022.
