Yunchan Lim of South Korea won the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which was held in Fort Worth, USA, on March 18.
Lim, an 18-year-old student at the Korea National University of Arts, is the youngest winner in the competition’s history. It was also the second consecutive win for a Korean pianist, following the previous victory in 2017.
The final competition was with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop. Lim performed Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3. Second place went to Anna Geniushene, 31, of Russia, and Dmytro Choni, 28, of Ukraine, took third place.
The competition commemorates Van Cliburn, who won the piano section of the first International Tchaikovsky Competition held in Moscow in 1958 during the Cold War. The competition was founded in 1962 and is held every four years.
16th Competition originally scheduled to be held last year, the competition was postponed one year due to the worldwide outbreak of the new corona virus, and was held from the 2nd to the 18th.
